Stress can be defined as a state of emotional or mental strain which in most cases have adverse effects. One is said not to be a good state of mind when they are stressed. Stress is caused by very many factors. Different people usually have different stress triggers. Some people get stressed at their workplace. Among the things at a workstation that can lead to stressful situations are long working hours, working under dangerous conditions, and also being unhappy with the job. There are also life stresses. Under life stress, there is the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job and getting married.
The cause of someone’s stressful situation can be themselves. One might stress themselves when they worry too much about certain things. Worrying about certain issues such as the fear of uncertainty, attitude and perceptions, unrealistic expectations, and major life changes can result in stress. It is unhealthy to be stressful. This is why people are advised to try as much as possible to be stress free. Stress has negative health implications. Irritability, a headache, fatigue, and difficulty in sleeping are the examples of the health implications of stress. The worst can happen with some of these health implications of stress. Several ways are used in the management of stress.
Some of these ways are as follows. It is important that a stressed person should avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Nicotine and caffeine are examples of stimulants. These substances will increase the levels of stress rather than reducing. Alcohol is a depressant when taken in large quantities, however, it is not a helpful way of dealing with stress. Another way of managing stress is getting enough sleep. This is because lack of sleep has been identified as a cause of stress. There are also some relaxation techniques that one might try to help them reduce stress. Majority of these relaxation techniques have been tried and tested.
The other way of dealing with stress is through doing exercise. There is an increase in the stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline when someone is stressed. Exercise, therefore, can be used as a surrogate to metabolize excessive stress hormones so that one can reach a more relaxed state. Iit is not, however, necessary that the exercise be vigorous. Brisk walking in fresh air can be very helpful. A more permanent situation is the incorporation of physical activities in your daily routine.
The are several mechanisms on how exercise help to relieve stress. One of these mechanisms is through pumping of endorphins into one’s body. The endorphins are known as brain’s feel-good transmitters. When someone exercises, they tend to forget about the irritations that they have had. Another way on how exercise reduces the stress levels is by improving someone’s mood. Improving the moods of a person is as a result of increased confidence, and lowering symptoms of depression.
