It’s estimated that well over 50 million Americans work from home, contributing more than $700 billion to the economy. A growing number of professionals in all fields work both at the office and at home. There must be a limit to the number of jobs that can be done from a remote location, but the number of freelancers and telecommuters continues to increase each year. Web developers, designers and photographers are among those spurring this trend.

There’s a downside to working at home. No one misses traffic jams and long commutes, but there are distractions at home that are never found in an office. Family members can get the idea that a home office isn’t the same as a “real” job. The dog needs walking or chores must be done. In order to be productive, it’s necessary to become a focused time-manager and exceptionally self-motivated.

Start Early

Forget 9-5. For many people, early morning hours are very productive. Make a pot of coffee and get right to work. It can be enormously satisfying to have already accomplished a lot before most people have reached their cubicles. Early morning is also a block of time without intrusive phone calls. This works in reverse for night owls.

Organize Your Day

Have your day structured like it would be in the office. Have some sort of schedule. Otherwise, tasks will be postponed until an all-nighter is necessary to catch up.

Have a Dedicated Work Space

A work space does not have to be a home office, although a room with a door is certainly useful. Psychologically, many people find that working in the same spot every day puts them in the right frame of mind for work.

Eliminate Social Media

Social media can become a black hole that sucks you in until valuable working hours have passed. Remove easy access from your toolbar bookmarks or pinned tabs. If they’re only one click away, it’s too easy to make that click.

Set Goals

This may be the most important tip of all. Set a goal for the day, for the week or for a longer time. Write goals down and post them prominently. Cross them off when accomplished.
